Just try to picture one of those perky and cute little mice having their classmate, Olive, being run over by a car, almost drowning on a vacation at their near-dead grandmother's beachside house, and being horribly betrayed by their boyfriend. (Yes, it is the same author.) This new Kevin Henkes is more grim and sentimental. And I'm not talking about the Lily's Purple Plastic Purse Kevin Henkes anymore. This lachrymose writing has an elegant simplicity that really works. I play the cello, and when I just play a note really in tune and whisk the bow across the string neatly, it sounds just as good as when I wiggle my fingers a lot and do all these fancy flourishes. He has this way of writing that's plain but still very powerful.

He's not some sappy poetic writer wannabe. I've read soooo many books that are supposed to touch your heart and are just boring and predictable. I must admit that I was really prepared for the worst. I could tell from the beginning that this wasn't going to be The Boxcar Children. Olive’s ocean should be sold with a complimentary bag of Kleenex. As she is leaving, Tate stops her and hands her a bag.Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes Greenwillow Godbee is getting old and all Martha hopes for is that she will be able to see her next summer as well. This would be "Olives Ocean." Martha says good-bye to Godbee. It said in the letter that Olive's mother had given her that she had always wanted to go to the ocean. Before Martha leaves she gets a bottle and fills it with the ocean to give to Olive's mom. Jimmy's younger brother, Tate, who is Martha's age, wants to help her.

Martha is outraged, but at the same time, heartbroken. Jimmy makes a video which was his entertainment this summer. She tells Godbee about him and all she has to say is to be careful. She begins to spend more time with Jimmy. Her older brother, Vince, is friends with them. Martha develops a crush on one of neighbor boys while there.

Olive

Every day she and Godbee tell each other something that they don't know about each other. In California, she tells Godbee about this. Olive admired Martha for who she was even though they never talked in school or hung out. The thing is, Martha didn't even know Olive.

Olive

Right before she left for California, she recieved a letter from Olive's mother that she died. Martha goes away every summer from her home in Wisconsin to visit her grandma, Godbee, on the coast of California.
